Around the world, there are 338 million people living with blindness or with a moderate to severe visual impairment. 77% of cases can be prevented or treated. About 90% of the world’s visually impaired people live in low-income countries and 1.4 million children are blind and another 19 million are visually impaired.

If they had been able to access the eye care they need, like a simple cataract surgery or a pair of glasses – the kind of care so many of us take for granted – they would be able to see clearly today.

However there is still hope. With the help of our generous supporters, we prevent and treat blindness through hands-on training, public health education, improved access to quality eye care, advocacy and partnerships with local health care organizations.

In 92 countries since 1982, our work has left a lasting legacy as Orbis-trained, local professionals impart their knowledge. During the pandemic, even as hospitals reallocated resources to care for COVID-19 patients in 2020, our teams worldwide worked with dedicated local partners to find safe ways to sustain eye care services.
