Orbis supporters say "thank you" to front line eye care heroes - and they respond

Last month we asked the Orbis Community to send messages of thanks to Orbis eye heroes who've been working on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic -- and we were overwhelmed by the outpouring of gratitude!

Thousands of messages poured in -- along with words of appreciation back from extraordinary Orbis volunteer doctors. If you haven't already, please send a message to eye care heroes to show you’re thinking of them and the sacrifices they’re making to keep their patients and communities healthy and safe during COVID-19.

Scroll through the messages below to see heartwarming words of encouragement to our eye heroes -- and their lovely responses back to the Orbis community.

The Orbis Community Pulls Together During Covid-19

Message of thanks from Barbara

“Your commitment and your courage are so overwhelming. I thank you with millions of other Americans for your work. Please stay safe.”

Message of thanks from Shilana

“Words can't say how appreciative and thankful we as a people are for your service. Thank you for all of your help!”

Dr. Helena Hurairah

Dr. Helena Hurairah is an ophthalmologist who spent three months at a COVID-19 test center in Brunei. Cases in that small Asian country have stabilized, so she's returned to her pediatric ophthalmology practice.

Dr. Helena Hurairah Responds

"Thank you so much everyone for your kind wishes! They were very much appreciated. We can definitely get through this together. I cannot wait to get back out with the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital team when international travel resumes normally. Thank you for continuing your support! Stay safe!"

Message of thanks from Bud

“Thanks to all health care workers for their help, their commitment to their chosen profession, and most importantly, for caring so much for those of us in pain. You are all heroes of the highest order.”

Dr. Andrew Choyce

Dr. Andrew Choyce, Orbis’s Staff Anesthesiologist, is on a frontline team of health workers saving lives in London. He’s also working on a project to create an online ophthalmic anesthesia learning hub through Cybersight — Orbis’s pioneering telemedicine digital platform.

Dr. Choyce responds

“It means so much to me that Orbis supporters took a moment — especially during these difficult times — to say thank you. The work on the front lines of the pandemic has been challenging, but I am grateful to have been able to lend a hand. Knowing that our community cares so much is truly heartwarming. I wish everyone happiness and good health!"

Message of thanks from Vikki

"Thank you for all the things you do to help in this pandemic. You are appreciated. Please stay safe."

Dr. Luz Gordillo

Dr. Luz Gordillo, a pediatric ophthalmologist in Peru, is fighting on the frontlines to save newborns’ eyesight. She screens and treats tiny premature babies who are at risk for Retinopathy of Prematurity — a condition that can lead to a lifetime of blindness if not treated immediately.
