Friends of Orbis gather in Palm Beach to honor Dr. Jay Fleischman

On a February evening in Palm Beach, friends of Orbis gathered to celebrate and honor Dr. Jay Fleischman’s long‑standing volunteer service and leadership, while learning about the latest developments in global eye care.

Dr. Fleischman’s story served as a reminder that progress in eye care does not happen overnight. It is driven by skilled professionals who give their time, share their expertise, and believe in the power of teaching.

The advances in technology and training seen today are built on years of commitment from volunteers and donors like Dr. Fleischman.

Thanks to the generosity of long‑standing supporters and hosts who opened their homes and networks, the evening was a great success and a testament to Palm Beach’s enduring connection to Orbis.

Many guests first encountered Orbis years ago during the Flying Eye Hospital’s visit to Palm Beach, while others were learning about the organization for the first time.

What united everyone was a shared curiosity and an openness to understanding how aviation, medicine, and technology are expanding access to quality eye care around the world.

President and CEO Kathleen Sherwin gave an inspiring talk.

Orbis leadership, staff, and Board were well represented throughout the evening by Orbis President and CEO Kathleen Sherwin; Orbis Vice President of Clinical Services and Technology, Dr. Hunter Cherwek; Board Chair John Slattery; Sam Wisel and Greta Link from the philanthropy team; and Orbis donor and Board member Jim Knight.

The evening would not have been possible without the hosts and supporters who brought people together with such care and thoughtfulness. Sincere thanks to Linda Olsson for opening her home, as well as Jane Katzen, Peter Cromarty, and Jay and Lorraine Fleischman, whose time and effort were instrumental in making the event a success. By inviting friends, colleagues, and fellow philanthropists to learn about Orbis, they helped introduce new voices and perspectives into the Orbis community.

To our long‑time donors and partners, thank you for your continued belief in Orbis and for standing with us as the need for eye care continues to grow worldwide. To those who joined us for the first time, thank you for taking the time to listen, ask questions, and imagine what your partnership could make possible.

Together, you are helping restore sight, strengthen communities, and change lives for generations to come.
