World Sight Day 2025: A Brighter Future for Prince

When six-year-old Prince walked into Kibagabaga Hospital in Kigali, Rwanda, during our recent Flying Eye Hospital project, she carried with her a lifetime of vision challenges—and the hope of seeing clearly for the very first time.

Prince’s surgery was performed by Orbis Volunteer Faculty member Dr. Lucy Barker, and the transformation was immediate. Although her sister felt nervous when it took Prince some time to wake up from anesthesia, the relief and joy she felt upon seeing the results was overwhelming.

What I hope for my sister is to study, maybe become a doctor, and have a good career,” she says, her voice full of hope for the future.

For Prince, the surgery means more than just aligned eyes—it means a fairer start at school, a stronger chance to thrive inside and outside the classroom, and the confidence to chase her dreams.

Her sister summed it up simply: “I am thankful, and I thank the organization of Orbis and you volunteering your time and effort to help us.
