We’re excited to share that Orbis recently opened a new office in Accra to expand access to eye care right across Ghana—all thanks to Orbis supporters and partners.

The Flying Eye Hospital first touched down in Ghana in 1990, with long-term country programs established in 2014, primarily from Kumasi. The official opening of the Orbis Ghana office in Accra represents a transformative moment for eye care in Ghana.

The office was inaugurated on 12 October 2025 during a visit from the Orbis UK team and The Aumund Foundation, a significant funder of eye care in Ghana. This achievement was made possible through their generous support, enabling Orbis to scale up sight-saving projects across 20 districts in Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions.

Strategically located in the heart of Accra’s commercial district at Advantage Place, 7th Avenue, Ridge West, 9th Floor, the new office positions Orbis Ghana to strengthen partnerships and deliver even greater impact.

The team has grown from three to seven dedicated professionals, including a Country Director, Senior Program Manager, Project Manager, Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning Officer, Finance Manager, and two Project Coordinators.

This expanded capacity will allow Orbis to reach more communities with comprehensive eye health services.

Why This Matters

Ghana faces a significant eye health challenge:

  • 209,000 people are living with blindness, and a further 330,000 live with severe vision loss.
  • There are only three paediatric ophthalmologists for the entire country.
  • 9,300 children live with blindness—up to 70% of which is avoidable.

Orbis Ghana has been working tirelessly to tackle this. In 2024 alone, Orbis Ghana operating districts delivered:

  • 19,000+ community eye screenings and examinations.
  • 95,000+ patient visits to eye care facilities.
  • 200+ trainings for eye care professionals.
  • 100+ sight-saving surgeries performed.

Through activities like the Refractive Error Among Children (REACH) project, Orbis is ensuring schoolchildren receive timely screenings, eyeglasses, and referrals for further treatment—helping them learn, thrive, and build brighter futures.
