Regular eye exams are essential for detecting vision problems early and keeping healthy sight. Sadly though, not every child can access the type of care they need. Mahfuza, an 11-year-old girl from Bangladesh, was fortunate to have her vision problems caught in time all thanks to Orbis supporters.

When Mahfuza had a minor accident while playing three years ago, her parents thought little of it. But as her vision blurred over the following months, her mother, Hawa, became concerned. She took Mahfuza to an Orbis partner hospital, Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, where she was diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes.

“When the doctors told me that my daughter had cataracts, I was devastated,” Hawa shares. "Seeing me worry about her constantly, my father consoled me by saying that if there is a disease, there must be a treatment. 'And we’ll do everything for her treatment,' he told me.

Mahfuza got the care she needed at an Orbis-supported hospital.

Mahfuza’s blurry vision made it hard to see at school and was pushing this once extroverted little girl back into her shell. “When teachers would ask her a question, she could not answer it so everyone would laugh at her. That would make her feel even worse.”

But thanks to the Orbis community and her family’s dedication, there was hope for Mahfuza. Recently, she underwent surgery at the hospital and when her bandages were removed, Mahfuza called out “oh, everything is so clear now!” Her parents hope to have her second surgery as soon as possible so Mahfuza can continue thriving in school.

"All parents want their children to be successful in life,” says Hawa. “I want to support my daughter's education and do everything in my capability to provide her with higher education so she can have a successful life."
