JOB SUMMARY

Based at the Orbis International New York Headquarters, the Senior Accountant is responsible for the timely and efficient support of the accounting function in HQ and is the full charge accountant for Orbis Canada. They are also responsible for global training of staff in the Abila MIP Fund Accounting software.

REPORTING & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Senior Accountant reports to the Controller. S/he works closely with Orbis colleagues at headquarters and Canada and liaises with Orbis colleagues in other country offices and affiliates around the globe.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

I Accounting function:

  • Assist with the management of the corporate general ledger, including the month-end/year-end close, preparation of monthly financial statements and other reports for management.
  • Prepare bank account reconciliations for the U. S. corporate and overseas field bank accounts.
  • Function as a key liaison with the corporate external audit firm.
  • Manage and reconcile Prepaid Expense and Prepaid Insurance accounts;
  • Manage and monitor inventory values recorded in MIP for FEH and Bosma warehouses;
  • Manage and monitor the global fixed assets function, including the Fixed Assets’ Depreciation schedule and related G/L accounts;
  • Reconcile Intercompany billing and wire clearing ledgers between HQ and country offices
  • Reconcile Due to/Due From ledgers between OI and affiliate offices;
  • Reconcile various general ledger accounts (i.e. Credit card Advances, Accrued Payables), etc.;
  • Prepare PBC audit workpapers during the annual audit review;
  • Prepare various monthly and year-end closing journal entries;
  • Process OI payroll on contingency basis;
  • Provide assistance to the Controller and Senior Accounting Manager on an as needed basis.
  • Assume additional duties and special projects such as ad-hoc project analysis, as assigned

II Accounting for Orbis Canada Affiliate:

  • Manage all accounting functions for Orbis Canada office;
  • Perform all bank reconciliations: Operating accounts and Investment account;
  • Reconcile the monthly revenue transactions from donor software;
  • Reconcile the general ledger monthly and prepare journal entries;
  • Prepare monthly financial statements for management;
  • Responsible for restricted accounting including deferred revenue reconciliation and releases from restriction;
  • Liaise with the Orbis Canada CEO to prepare the financial reports for Board meetings;
  • Manage the annual audit of Orbis Canada and liaise with external auditors;
  • Prepare the annual compliance with CRA for Harmonized Sales Tax (HST);
  • Provide guidance to office for all banking functions.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration or related field required, MBA/CPA a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years non-profit accounting experience required, restricted accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in financial statement preparation.
  • Previous experience using Abila MIP Fund Accounting software required, experience training users desired.
  • Experience interfacing with external auditors.
  • Previous experience using a payroll service desirable.

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to perform accurate data entry.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and (verbal & written) communication skills: successfully interact with colleagues on different professional levels and cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent organizational skills and a keen attention to detail; ability to effectively multi-task and manage detail-oriented responsibilities with the appropriate sense of urgency and follow tasks through to completion.
  • Able to take initiative, be resourceful, prioritize, and good follow-through.
  • Highly motivated and the ability to work productively in team as well as independently.
  • Strong computer skills: Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • International travel of up to 5% required.
