JOB SUMMARY

As an essential member of the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital (FEH) team, the Communications Manager is responsible for planning, developing and implementing communications activities for all Flying Eye Hospital programs. The Communications Manager will work to increase Orbis’s brand awareness, build and protect reputation and generate positive media coverage around the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital Projects. They are responsible for raising awareness and favorability among the general public, policy makers, key opinion leaders and media in the countries where we work about the issue of avoidable blindness and Orbis’s impact.

The position requires approximately 35 weeks of worldwide travel per year.

REPORTING & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The FEH Communications Manager reports to the FEH Director with technical reporting to the Chief, Global Communications and Marketing. They will work closely with colleagues in the Global Communications Team, liaise with the staff in the regional, country and affiliate offices, as well as with local hosts of the FEH projects.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS / KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Marketing:

  • Produce and distribute case stories for each Flying Eye Hospital program that clearly illustrates the patient’s need, the context to global blindness issues, the trainee perspective and the human-interest angle.
  • Work in partnership with the Visual Communications Consultant to gather detailed case study materials that showcase Orbis success stories.
  • When appropriate, participate in surgical case reviews to gather post-program materials from participants and patients.
  • Work closely with the Visual Communications Consultant to integrate and maximize visual materials into the overall traditional and social media strategy developed around each FEH program.
  • Coordinate Communications activities on FEH Projects, including the formal Opening Ceremony, Media tours of the FEH and Donor and VIP visits to each project.
  • Work closely with the Orbis International (OI) global communications team to produce and post timely social media content around Flying Eye Hospital projects.
  • Work with the OI global communications team to further develop the social media strategy for the Flying Eye Hospital as an integral part of the OI global media strategy.
  • Create and coordinate the production of project communications materials including banners and project brochures for each project.
  • Work with a translation company to ensure all communications materials are also available in the local language, when appropriate.

Communications:

  • In close partnership with the global communications and regional/country program teams, work to develop a communications plan for each FEH program that incorporates key health messages, promotes the work of Orbis and raises awareness around eye care.
  • Determine the appropriate channels of communications to deliver targeted messages to media, policy makers, community leaders, health professionals and the general public.
  • Work closely with the Chief, Global Marketing and Communications and the FEH management team on developing media relations and public relations strategies and programs that heighten awareness of and generate support for the Flying Eye Hospital and for Orbis programs worldwide.
  • Develop, write and edit press releases, talking points, key messages and speeches to support FEH project activities and ensure timely distribution of program background information and related materials to media and other Orbis staff.
  • Prepare the communications section for the intermediate and final program report, including a summary of key messages, media contacts, media clips, events and program highlights.

Media:

  • Identify, plan and execute the FEH media relations activities to enhance Orbis’s image with global and local media representatives and the public at large, under the supervision of the Chief, Global Communications & Marketing. This includes proactive media outreach, identifying local and global publicity opportunities and managing the assignments of visiting journalists.
  • Collaborate with headquarters, regional, country and affiliate office communication teams to shape global and local strategies for proactive media outreach.
  • Coordinate and lead the visits of local and international media members on the ground.
  • Provide media training to FEH staff and Volunteer Faculty and manage all media requests directed at Orbis staff and Volunteers during program. When appropriate, act as a spokesperson for the FEH.

Program Coordination:

  • Participate as a member of the FEH planning team prior to a program to assess and work with local partners in the development of communications activities during the program.
  • Work with local partners and FEH Logistics team to organize the opening ceremony press conference (identify venue, speakers and guests list, protocol, visual materials and press invite). Manage all communications and media aspects of the event.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in Communications or Marketing.
  • Minimum 5 years, communications and media relations work experience.
  • Demonstrated awareness of global health and international development.
  • Previous experience in communicating medical or technical information to general audiences is a plus.
  • Prior experience working in an international non-profit environment is a plus.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Outstanding presentation and written communications skills in English – working knowledge of a second language is a plus.
  • Excellent understanding of and experience with using Social Media channels.
  • Demonstrated ability to strategize, organize and articulate the mission and vision of an organization.
  • Photography knowledge and the ability to shoot with a standard DSLR camera and/or compose strong images using smartphone.
  • Excellent interpersonal and diplomacy skills; the ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
  • Team oriented work style, with a pro-active, open-minded, and flexible approach.
  • High level of professional integrity and discretion.
  • Exceptional tolerance to stress: ability to function effectively in a demanding, fast-paced, and constantly changing work environment.
  • High degree of computer literacy (Windows and Mac Operating systems, Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite).
  • Ability and desire to travel to low and middle income countries up to 10 months a year – including no significant disqualifying factors that would preclude approval of entry visas in the countries on the FEH travel schedule.
