As a member of the Orbis Finance team, the Controller is responsible for and oversees the accounting functions in the NY Headquarters.

The Controller ensures that all transactions are recorded in accordance with GAAP and is responsible for administration of the annual external audit. Based in Orbis’ headquarters in New York City, they are responsible for ensuring that the accounting system is capable of producing accurate and timely reports to internal and external users.


The Controller reports to the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer. They work closely with the Director of Program Finance, and Director of Financial Planning and Analysis, and liaises with all headquarters colleagues. The Controller also supervises the full accounting staff, directly supervising the Sr. Accounting Manager, Accounts Payable staff and Payroll and an overall team of six staff.


  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain and analyze the general ledger accounting records, conduct research and resolve technical accounting issues and oversee month-end close and general ledger activity. Ensure transactions are recorded in accordance with GAAP. Ensure the integrity of the chart of accounts and coding structures.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; prepare and clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual consolidated financial statements.
  • Manages all fund accounting and reporting, particularly related to restricted contributions and net assets
  • Oversee the preparation of the Form 990, 990T and other required tax returns.
  • Analyze and review accounting administration policies and oversee appropriate internal controls. Provide effective supervision to accounting staff by ensuring standard accounting principles as well as Orbis processes and procedures are followed.
  • Oversee required schedules and manage the daily aspect of the annual audit.
  • Recommend any revisions to or creation of financial policies and procedures. Assist in communication and implementation of all headquarters policies.
  • Manage the headquarters balance sheet, ensuring timely reconciliation and valid balances carried forward.
  • Oversee and ensure maintenance of schedules and other supporting documentation relative to In Kind Contributions are recorded appropriately on a monthly basis.
  • Oversee accounts payable function including disbursement for operations by check, ACH and wire, FX trades for foreign currency payments, cash advances via Western Union for programs.
  • Manage the staff member responsible to process US payrolls including reconciliation reports and executes transfers to third parties.
  • Together with the CFAO, manage domestic and international banking relationships and regulatory filings (FBAR).


  • Oversee the recording and reconciliation of monthly financial data for Orbis Canada and Orbis Singapore.
  • Ensure timely preparation of monthly financial statements and annual audited financial statements.
  • Oversee monthly billing for projects funded by Orbis Affiliates.


  • At least ten (10) years accounting experience with a minimum of five (5) years of experience in a non-profit fund accounting environment with various accounting functions and reporting requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance and knowledge of general accepted accounting principles.
  • Relevant post-graduate degree (MBA), professional certifications (CPA, CMA, etc.) preferred.


  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to effectively interact with senior management and individuals with varying degrees of financial knowledge.
  • Computer literacy (accounting software – Abila MIP currently in use by Orbis, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & MS Outlook).
  • Able to interact and manage people of diverse cultural backgrounds, while fostering an open trusting working environment.
  • Able to work effectively in a team-driven and collaborative environment with a strong emphasis on accountability.
  • Supports a customer-centered approach to programs, services, and systems.
