Together with John A. and Susan Sobrato, Orbis is increasing access to eye care for the most underserved communities. This unique initiative builds on our success in rural India, Bangladesh, and other underserved communities around the world, where we’ve seen our women-led green vision centers connect people with the eyecare they need to thrive.
Our centers are strategically established in rural, underserved areas and run by Orbis-trained female staff. This bolsters access to care, since women are statistically more likely to seek eye care from other women—both for themselves and for their children. The centers are also both economically and environmentally sustainable within three years. This measure further strengthens access to care, since our solar-powered centers continue to operate even during power outages, which are common in the areas where we work.
The ripple effect of our vision centers, combined with the power of this matching gift challenge, have the potential to build 20 vision centers. In total, the Sobratos’ generosity—and your support—will enable us to reach 2 million people.
