The Deshmukh Family
Seven-year-old Rohini and her two brothers, Suraj, age six, and Kuber, age ten, were all diagnosed with bilateral cataracts during a screening at their school in the remote, hilly Sangli district of southern Maharashtra in western India. The screening was supported through an Orbis pediatric ophthalmology project with Lions NAB Eye Hospital (LNEH), where the three siblings, as well as their classmates in need, subsequently received free surgery. Rohini and her brothers excel in school now that their cataracts have been removed.
LNEH and its five satellite hospitals serve an area of more than 20 million people in southern Maharashtra. As many as 60 percent of LNEH patients receive services for free or at subsidized rates. Orbis began building up the pediatric eye care capacity of LNEH in 2004, and the number of children seen by the pediatric unit has since grown from 100 patients a month to more than 600.
