Racheal sees her mother for the first time

May 2017

When Verah heard there was going to be an Orbis eye screening in Mansa Village, she bicycled with her daughter, one-year-old Racheal, 60 kilometers from her home to the Mansa Hospital.

At the screening, Racheal was diagnosed with cataracts. Verah and Racheal travelled more than 500 kilometers by bus to the Kitwe Eye Annexe for cataract surgery, performed by Dr. Mboni, an Orbis-trained ophthalmologist.

After a year of darkness, little Racheal had her bandages removed and was able to see her mother, Verah, for the very first time.

Racheal sees her mother for the first time

As Racheal plays happily with an empty tub on the bed, it's easy to forget the impact this short operation will have on this little girl.

A big thanks to everyone who helped Racheal see her mum for the first time - Racheal's mother, Dr Mboni, our wonderful expert volunteers, and of course you - our supporters - without who none of this wold be possible.

Help provide a life-changing operation to another little one like Racheal
