ORBIS and Noor Dubai Partner to Save Sight
Thanks to funding from Noor Dubai, ORBIS is expanding the outreach of five rural eye care centers in Southern Ethiopia. Through this project, ORBIS can train staff and volunteers along with providing much needed ophthalmic equipment and supplies to strengthen the capacity of these centers to provide quality medical care to local communities across 45 woredas or districts.

To date, the centers have provided a total of 264,894 people with eye care services, out of which 256,301 people were treated with 1% tetracycline eye ointment and Zithromax to treat trachoma, an infectious eye condition that can lead to blindness. These Centers have also performed 4,563 free operations to treat blinding eye conditions, including trachoma and cataract. More than 4,000 people were provided with free prescription eye glasses.
ORBIS has also trained 795 nurses, teachers, government health workers and women’s group leaders to conduct basic eye screenings to identify children and adults who need further treatment and to educate the public about preventive health measures they can take to protect their sight.

Treating sight-threatening impairments and restoring vision not only allows an individual to see, it also has profound social and economic implications that can forever change the quality of their life. ORBIS respectfully acknowledges Noor Dubai’s contribution toward building comprehensive eye care services in rural Ethiopia and is profoundly grateful to Noor Dubai for making this work possible and helping us to fulfill our mission of saving sight.
On behalf of the Ethiopian communities that are benefiting and will continue to benefit from the eye care service delivery made possible through this project, ORBIS thanks Noor Dubai for their investment and support.
