The challenge begins in the ancient Inca capital of Cusco. Here you can visit local Inca ruins before heading out to the remote and rarely visited Lares Valley.
Far from the overcrowded traditional Inca Trail, this route boasts spectacular scenery and offers a real insight into how the Quechua people live. Dressed in brightly coloured ponchos and living in thatched stone houses, farmers herd llamas and alpacas, and women weave traditional clothes.
The region is home to the Banos del Inca, possibly the best hot springs in southern Peru, with spectacular views of the surrounding snowy peaks and glaciers.
The challenge will involve strenuous hiking at high altitude, but all of your hard efforts will be worth it when you arrive at Machu Picchu, where you will have the opportunity to explore the Lost City of the Incas in all its glory.
