Mike Redding's Trek for Sight

My ORBIS fundraising target is:  $100,000

My activity

Image of Mike with backpackBeginning April 4, 2007, I embarked on a hike along the Appalachian Trail, across 14 states, from Georgia to Maine. Walking the Appalachian Trail has been a longstanding goal of mine since I was a boy, and the time finally arrived to get out and see it. My wife and four children have been very supportive and are happy with a speedy return. For all those who kept telling me they were gonna go with me but gave a rain check, "Rain Check" is my trail name which has been spotted along some of the most beautiful spots of the eastern United States. The hike is a little over 2,000 miles, and I would like to encourage you to donate per mile if possible. I was very fortunate to complete the journey to the top of Mt. Katahdin, Maine in just 141 days on August 27! I made a personal pledge equal to my total mileage to ORBIS upon completion of the journey. I duly encourage you to donate to ORBIS as well since there is still time to reach my goal. This walk is dedicated to my mother who taught me love, humility and to see past my nose.

Why I support ORBIS

I believe the gift of sight is the most precious. I retired from the military a few years ago after seeing many terrible things, but to me the most shocking was witnessing blindness in children while I was deployed to various countries in Africa. I was inspired to learn of the work ORBIS was doing, especially through the Flying Eye Hospital. I think ORBIS is one of the best endeavors currently at work on our planet! So I share the burden of my walk with you to share the gift of sight with others less fortunate. Click here to read more.
