Anesthesiologist
|
JOB SUMMARY:
As an essential member of the Medical Team on the
ORBIS
Flying
Eye
Hospital, the Anesthesiologist is responsible for managing all anesthesia related needs of the FEH programs. This includes the administering of general and local anesthesia to patients, teaching of anesthesia and recovery procedures and theory to local doctors and nurses, ensuring maintenance of all anesthetic drugs and equipment. This position requires up to 45 weeks of worldwide travel per year, mostly to developing countries.

REPORTING & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
The FEH Anesthesiologist reports to the FEH Medical Director and works closely with FEH medical personnel (staff ophthalmologist, & nurses), visiting Volunteer Faculty members, and local medical professionals.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: |
- Evaluate and approve patients recommended by the medical team for potential surgery, and incorporate the information into the ORBIS computer/patient record database.
- Administer local and general anesthesia to surgical patients, monitor vital signs, and manage patients' emergence and recovery from anesthesia.
- Teach general and local ophthalmic anesthesia/recovery procedure and theory to local doctors and nurses.
- Assess the Local Hospital Anesthesia setup and in consultation with the FEH Medical Director decide on anesthesia for children below two (2) years of age.
- Conduct inventory, order and maintain appropriate supply of anesthetic drugs and equipment.
- Ensure effective accounting of narcotics and controlled substances.
- As delegated by the FEH Medical Director, serve as a member of the Program Team to design, plan, implement and evaluate specific programs.
- Oversee implementation of all medical emergency policies.
- Participate actively in fund raising events and goodwill tours on and off the plane and represent ORBIS at social functions.
- Attend weekly staff meetings.
- Comply with approved FEH policies and procedures.
- Assist in the daily cleaning, set-up and packing of the aircraft.
- Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: |
- Medical Degree.
- Residency Certificate and Fellowship Certificate (if applicable).
- Board Exam Certificate: A.B.A. (American Board of Anesthesiology), F.R.C.A. (Fellow of the Royal College Anesthesiologists) or equivalent.
- Current Medical license or Annual Registration Certificate of the state/province/region of primary country or nation of practice.
- Min. 5 years related work experience;
- Demonstrated knowledge of A.C.L.S. techniques, Ophthalmic Anesthesia and Peribulbar blocks.
- Previous international work experience highly desirable.

- Fluency in English – working knowledge of a second language is a plus.
- Ability to travel to developing countries up to 80% of the time. This includes having no significant disqualifying factors that would preclude approval of entry visas in the countries on the FEH travel schedule.
